My mother said a silver cigar shaped UFO chased us down the road. This started out to be another uneventful trip to my grandmothers, so I thought.
It took place on the week of dove season 1956 or 1957 so I would have been around 13 years old.
This is as close to the incident as I can get.
My grandmother lived in Sawyer, KS.
It is now around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
My dad told my mother that he was going to stay overnight so he could go hunting that evening and the next morning with his friends and they would bring him home.
So now, it was just mom & I on the trip home from Sawyer to Wichita, and she was determined to get home by 9:00 p.m.
We normally never get home that early and I tried to talk my mom into staying longer at grandmothers by bribing her saying that I did not have any homework to do when we got home.
My mom said no we are going, I want to get home by 9:00 p.m., this is how I remembered the time, so we left around 7:00 p.m.
It took around that time to get back to Wichita.
We start out going down Highway 42, this goes to Isabel around 10 miles away and then to Nashville, KS around 10 miles away.
After passing Isabel on the way to Nashville around 2½ miles down the road headed to Nashville there is an area where this is no visible houses just rolling pasture for 4 more miles to Nashville.
We just passed the last house where no one lived.
This I'm not sure about, so this may not be true, but I think I saw a heat mirage way higher up in the air of what is normal, probably at least 3½' high off the side of the road.
The following I am absolutely sure happened.
I fell asleep instantly, when I never fall asleep going home, never.
Then, I was wide awake and was sitting in the car.
It was pitch black except for the Moon shining through some cottonwood trees.
The car was turned off and my mother woke up, I asked where in the world are we?
All that she said was that she took a detour.
My mother would have never taken a detour because she hated to detour.
A big annoyance with my dad who took detours all the time and would get lost so that didn't make sense.
It so happened we were out in a pasture, and we had to drive down a cow path to get there which was very strange and was covered with deep wash outs that would have woken me up.
We were only 2 miles from where I fell asleep and just around 17 miles from my grandmother's house.
We went on to Nashville and after a mile of silence my mother said a flying saucer like a long silver cigar chased us down the road.
She said she yelled and yelled at me, but I would not wake up, all that she said the rest of the way home.
When we went in the house, I asked what time it was, and she looked and said it was 11:30 p.m., somewhere we lost 2½ hours.
Why did she not reach over and shake me awake if I was in the front seat?
For some reason I thought I got in the backseat of the station wagon not the front, that could be the reason she did not shake me awake but I woke up in the front seat.
I would not have got in the back when my dad was not with us.
The reason I am sharing this story now is I have wondered for years and years if something happened to my mother & I.
For some reason I have a strange feeling every time we drive by that area.
